35. HUNTING DIRK WITH PISTOL Spanish, 1775-1800
Type D. Hilt silver-mounted. Guard carved cockle shell, showing three "zones of growth." Grip of plain polished horn overlaid and reinforced with shell from which elongate leaf motifs continue, back and front, from pommel to guard.

Blade double-edged, somewhat Oriental in form, with three deep crisp grooves on each side; on left side along central groove runs pistol barrel, from rear of which projects stud serving as trigger; on right, grooves end above a rectangular panel etched with floral scrolls to which is attached small miguelet lock partially covered by the drooping shell guard.

Scabbard of yellowish parchment over wood; hook for suspension; chape and ferrule of plain silver; scabbard enlarged at mouth to accommodate pistol mechanism, :and provided with sheath containing combination iron ramrod and cleaning rod.

36. HUNTING SWORD WITH PISTOL French, 1775-1790
Type E-F. Hilt silver-mounted. Shell guard rudimentary. Opposed quillons and grip, guard expanded horizontally and chased with diaper pattern. Quillons chiseled as lattice work ajouré, with festoon and with terminals bulbous and foliate. Ricasso boldly carved with scrolls and festoons. Grip of black wood with silver strip inserts at edges, and on each side three inset rivet heads as rosettes chased in whorls.

Blade has on left at base an etched rectangle; inscription: LEPETON, MARCHAND FOURBISSEUR A LA TETE NOIRE, RUE DE CARMES, AU COIN DE CELLE DE L'AUMOC, A ROUEN; above this hunting themes etched, all with traces of gold in the lines. On right, flintlock pistol mechanism; barrel russet and gilded over etching of trophies and scrolls, which extend also on blade.

37. HUNTING SWORD French, 1780-1800
Type F. Hilt and scabbard mountings similar in shape to No. 41, but of plain steel carved in low relief with portrait medallions against flowered latticed background. Edges of grip with floral festoons.

Blade bears at base etched panel with strapwork against hatched background; also cartouche with inscription, left, MONFORT MD FOURBISSEUR PRES LA DAME STE ELISABETE A NANCY; right, DE LA MANUFACTURE DE LA MARQUE AU RAISON FAITE, A SOHLINGEN B F, and small medallion with flowers and script initials c c (?). Above these panels, hound pursuing, left, stag; right, fox.

Scabbard of black leather without foundation. Button suspension.

38. COUTEAU DE CHASSE French, 1780
Type F. Hilt of steel carved in low relief against matte gold background. Grip rectangular in section; on each side large medallion with (page 82) classical figure; also trophy, flutings, and swag. At top of grip an asymmetrical lobe.

Blade German, blued for nearly entire length and gilded over etching; also ornamented with intaglio facets in radial and parallel arrangement. In etched design appears man in curious costume with long coat and knee-breeches and head-dress apparently of an American Indian; he holds sword and flintlock pistol.

39. HUNTING SWORD German (?), 1790
Type F. Grip of brown horn grooved longitudinally and ridged, with three oval rivet heads as ornamental medallions. Mountings of hilt and scabbard of steel pierced and chased in medallions, wreaths, and floral motifs.

Blade plain, clip point, ungrooved.

Scabbard of black leather over wood; double ring suspension.

40. COUTEAU DE CHASSE WITH SHEATH French (?), 1775-1800
Type F. All mountings in chiseled steel showing floral sprays, scrolls, panoplies, with background finely punctate and gilded. Grip of plates of bone with molded edges, held in place on each side by rivet heads as ornamental medallions.

Blade German, with short panel at base on each side gilded and etched with strapwork against hatched background.

Scabbard of white shagreen over wood; button combined with single ring for suspension; large chape and ferrule richly decorated en suite.
