17. SABRE (HUNTING SWORD?) Polish (?), Early XVIII Century
Hilt consists of ivory grip alone (guard of type D lacking?). Here is the sculptured bust of a man whose head is shaven save for apical lock; the pearl in his earring is seized by a serpent which coils about a pedestal, having emerged from a grape-vine. The theme suggests the loss of some Turkish province through intemperance (?).

Blade of Mohammedan "Khyber knife": single-edged; back-edged at point, then blunt and widening; sides smooth and flat; near attachment to hilt appears a slight silver support with chased scrolls and shells. Blade had "damascus watering" of high quality; its color is largely worn away.

18. SABRE Saxon (?), 1750
Hilt mounted with blued silver, embossed in strong relief. Without guard. At ricasso large mask on both sides. Quillons as quiver. Pommel sculptured in the round as head of ram from whose mouth hangs knuckle guard of chain. Grip of ivory.

Blade broad, curved, of watered steel with clip point and single broad shallow groove on each side; at base small gilded panel with inscription; forte blued and gilded over etching: floral ornaments, shield against ajouré background with crest and Emir's head.

Scabbard of black pebbled leather over wood; double ring suspension; mountings of blued metal en suite. Bears three marks; that of the Bureau of Paris (ET) is repeated on the hilt, and indicates importation into France.

(Webmaster's Note: There is no high resolution plate for this sword although you can click on the image to see a larger version. The image you see is included in the main text pages and is quite poor in comparison to the high resolution lithograph plates. I can only surmise that the sword was unavailable for photography at the time the book was being compiled.)
