98. COURT SWORD French, 1778
Hilt silver-gilt with paste brilliants. Guard oval, with scalloped border, its central design alternately radiating brilliants and gilded metal. On its distal side jewels are replaced with nail-heads arranged in radial design and with chasing. On ricasso brilliants form six pointed stars. Pas d'âne non-functional, gilded, chased in tangent circles. Two quillons present whose ends droop toward blade. Knuckle guard with rosette of brilliants at center, elsewhere decorated with bands of nail-heads. Pommel ovoid. On pas d'âne and knuckle guard the Paris date letter 1778, and marks of Inspector Jean-Baptiste Fouache (1774-1780).

Blade three-edged, gilded with scrolls and inscription: VIVE LE ROY.

99. COURT SWORD French, 1790
Hilt silver-gilt enriched with bands and flower-shaped medallions of paste brilliants. Guard oval with alternate radiate bands of gilt metal and brilliants ajouré, together with flower medallions; no jewels on side toward blade.

Blade two-edged, with median flattening; etched and gilded in strapwork design with medallions of trophies, flaming heart, star, Justice, and Fame.

Plate LXXV Reubell Benefaction

100. COURT SWORD French, 1780-1790
Hilt silver-gilt chiseled in relief with trophied medallions, panels, and chased with flowers borders and line ornament set with paste brilliants. On side of guard toward hilt the' stones are mainly clear white, but in medallion frames on ricasso, pommel, right lobe of guard, also bands at top and bottom of grip several stones are distinctly red; while in medallion frame on left side of grip a few stones are green. No stones on blade side of guard. Pas d'âne non-functional. On pas d'âne and ricasso verification stamp of the decree of 1803, showing use 1809-1819. Also on (page 49) pas d'âne poinçon of Inspector Henri Clavel (1780-1789), poinçon de charge of Saint-Meixent, and maker's mark unidentified.

Blade three-edged, gilded over etching at base in design of parallel slanting bars; above this, forte is blued and gilded over etching in scroll design and inscription: VAINCRE OU MOURIR POUR LA NATION, LA LOT, LE ROT.

Scabbard of white shagreen over wood with silver-gilt fittings chased in scroll and floral designs, with medallion en suite on top ferrule; double ring suspension; chape missing.

Note: This sword was unquestionably used during the time of Louis XVIII; it probably dates from the last years of Louis XVI.

101. COURT SWORD French, 1797-1809
Hilt silver, closely and richly set with paste brilliants in openwork floral designs. Guard oval with scalloped border; side toward blade silvered, but without brilliants. Pas d'âne non-functional. Broad knuckle guard. Grip en suite. Pommel somewhat flattened; large brilliant at top. On pommel stamp of petit garantie 1797-1809.

Blade double-edged, flattened; blued and gilded over etching in design of strapwork, scrolls, and banners.

102. COURT SWORD Portuguese (?), After 1800
Hilt silver set with paste brilliants in openwork design of leaves and flowers. Guard oval with scalloped edge; on side toward blade no jewels. Pas d'âne absent. Broad knuckle guard. Grip en suite. Pommel urn-shaped, in its lower half jewels set in longitudinal lines.

Blade three-edged; at base gilded over etching and blued; design includes figure, trophies, Maltese cross, scrolls, "soleil," hand holding sword.

103. COURT SWORD Spanish, 1800
Hilt of gilded bronze enclosing mother-of-pearl; simple but excellent workmanship. Guard oval, mother-of-pearl, with metal rim scalloped on inner edge of hilt side. Pas d'âne nonfunctional. Quillon does not turn to right. Pommel flattened.

Blade two-edged; basal portion oval in section; entire forte blued and gilded over etching of panels, floral motifs, and on right, inscription: VIVA EL REY. Fore-part of blade retains high polish.
